I actually considered something like this, since I can basically bring 40 cents to the card shop and build a deck along these lines right out of the common boxes...
Generally, I really like all-common decks. Scrye published one called "smoke and mirrors" that was nothing but commons from Onslaught and Legions. It was red/blue and relied on a lot of bizzare tricks to get by. Often, I took that deck with me to events that I was running. Since I couldn't play in them, I'd just play side games with it, usually against little kids who I knew didn't have a good deck built. If they could beat it, I'd break out something more refined.
I clicked on Spook's name and could not follow the link to anyplace useful. Would like to know if he is a judge/organiser and where.
I assume it is in USA since 40c will not buy that many commons in RSA.
On the deck...
I think play a couple of games with it. See how it goes.
A tendency that I got when I built commons decks was that commons that are good in limited tend to do well in those decks.
So I feel that you should definitely try Kabuto Moth. It was one of the highest pick commons in kamigawa. It will give your little creatures some more ability to fight bigger creatures.
